Can’t seem to give up your favourite shorts for the chilly months ahead? Here are tips and outfit ideas on how to wear shorts in winter. Summer comes to mind when you think about wearing shorts. But winter? Not so much. Why not?

I know the thought of wearing shorts in brutal winter weather sounds daunting, but it doesn’t have to be, and you don’t have to give them up either. You can wear them and stay warm and chic during that time of year.

Below, I have compiled some tips and outfit ideas to help you wear shorts this winter and look stylish without worrying about catching a chill. I hope you love them as much as I do.

How to Wear Shorts in Winter: 7 Stylish Outfit Ideas

Choose Shorts in the Right Fabrics

It’s cold during this time of year, and you can’t expect to wear the same type of shorts you did in summer. Keep your linen, cotton, and denim shorts tucked away in your wardrobe until next summer.

Instead, choose shorts made with winter-friendly fabrics to keep you warm without compromising style. Opt for shorts in the following fabrics:

  • Wool
  • Wool is a classic choice because it’s elegant, thick, and keeps you warm on frosty days. I love them because they look great with neutral-coloured blouses and are perfect for office wear.
  • Leather
  • If you have an edgy sense of style, add leather shorts to your winter wardrobe. You can dress them up or down for any occasion, and they protect you from harsh winter winds.
  • Tweed
  • Here’s another good option. Tweed shorts give your outfit an elegant, preppy look for the office.

Wear Tights Under Them

You need tights to rock your favourite shorts without worrying about frostbite. Think black, navy, or deep burgundy-coloured tights—they look great with most shorts. You can get creative and pair them with patterned or textured tights for a playful look.

If the days are extra cold, wear fleece-lined tights to stay warm and chic.

Choose Shorts in Fall and Winter Colors

Embrace the season by wearing fall and winter-coloured shorts in beige, camel, grey, and black. These colours add elegance to your look and are easier to mix and match with other pieces.

For example, pair beige shorts with a cream turtleneck, black tights, and a charcoal grey coat for a polished look.

If you want a bolder look, opt for jewel-toned shorts like emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red, or amethyst purple. These colours complement darker winter palettes and metallic accessories. For instance, pair sapphire blue shorts with a black turtleneck, black tights, and a navy coat for a sophisticated vibe.

Layer with Coats

Coats are essential pieces that can elevate your shorts outfit while keeping you cosy at the same time. If you want a casual look, oversized coats or puffer jackets pair nicely with shorts. However, if you prefer a dressier ensemble, opt for trench coats or longline wool coats.

Choose a knee-length or longer coat to cover your legs and protect you from freezing winter winds. Plus, they also create a more balanced silhouette.

Wear Them with Oversized Sweaters

If you don’t want to wear a coat with your shorts, try an oversized knit sweater. It will keep you warm while balancing your silhouette by adding volume to the top half to complement the streamlined shape of the shorts.

This white and black striped sweater paired with black leather shorts is one of my favourites. It’s such a simple outfit that you can put together in minutes—a win-win!

Add a Scarf

Scarves are a must-have in your winter wardrobe and elevate your shorts outfit while protecting you from the cold.

Opt for scarves with bold colours, patterns, or luxurious textures like cashmere. Drape it over your shoulders or wrap it around your neck, and you’re done.

Wear a Belt

Keep your waist snatched in shorts with a belt. Adding a belt can level up your ensemble and make it pop.

Choose leather belts with intricate buckles to add timeless appeal to your outfit and ensure your shorts stay in place all day.

Pair with Boots

Keep your feet toasty while looking fabulous with shorts. There are various types of boots and they look extra chic with tights. For a casual look, pair ankle boots with your shorts. They’re comfy and ideal for casual outings.

If you want a sexier look with more coverage, wear knee-high or over-the-knee boots with tailored shorts. They’re my favourite because they make your legs look longer and add a touch of elegance.

Pair with a Blazer

If you’re not a fan of coats or want a tailored look, wearing a blazer with your shorts is a great way to look chic and stay warm if the days aren’t too cold.

This ensemble works best when the blazer and shorts are the same length but can also work if one is slightly longer or shorter.

Mistakes to Avoid When Wearing Shorts in Winter

Don’t ignore proportions when putting together your shorts outfit this winter. Otherwise, you might end up looking unbalanced.

Avoid pairing bulky, oversized tops with extremely short shorts or wearing very long coats without considering the length of your shorts. Instead, wear oversized tops with longer, tailored shorts for a more balanced look.

Conclusion

There are plenty of ways to wear shorts in winter, as shown in the outfits above. By choosing the right fabrics, using the right accessories, and layering with essential winter clothing, you can rock your shorts this winter in style.
